A video game sequel that we have been waiting on for more than two decades has arrived! Streets of Rage 4 just launched for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, Playstation 4, and the Nintendo Switch. This is the day one review, and the retro nostalgia is still there!

In the Streets of Rage series, you walk the streets beating down punks, cops, big bad bosses, and anything else that gets in your path. Combine this classic side-scrolling action with smooth visuals, and an amazing soundtrack, and you get a modern, but authentic experience!

This new game takes place 10 years after SOR3 and includes classic characters, plus an assortment of new characters. The story is centered around cleaning up the streets in various locations. The cleanup consists of taking on corrupt cops and serving a beat down to crime syndicates.

SOR4 has five game modes to enjoy including: Story Mode, Arcade Mode, Battle Mode, Boss Rush, and Online co-op! Once you complete the story mode you unlock access to arcade, battle, and boss rush. I didn’t have a chance to do a deep dive into these modes but rest assured that we’ll be tackling these once we complete the story.

The core gameplay remains the same, but it’s given a refresh by adding unique abilities and skills to each character. Each character has their own defensive special, attacking special, and air special move. You can combine basic attacks with special moves to create unique combos and run the damage upon enemies you encounter. Weapons such as pipes, knives, and more are also thrown into the mix! These weapons can either hurt or harm you because enemies have the ability to use them as well. Don’t get caught slipping! If things get too hairy, you have a special ability that your character is able to use by collecting stars that are hidden in the level. This is a devastating attack that can turn things around in a difficult battle. Combo into these abilities to deliver the most damage to your foes!

SO4 features multiple difficulty options to choose from, and these options help to make the game suitable for all skill levels. The options keep going from there, including the option to add more lives, which will lower your score, but it can make the game less frustrating for newer players. If you’re a hardcore gamer, you might want to play for on a higher difficulty and set your sights on unlocking the game’s accolades.

Streets of Rage 4 feels like a classic 90’s gaming experience. Hand drawn characters have replaced pixels to keep things feeling modern, and the soundtrack will have you listening even when you’re not playing the game. The game is polished, and feels great! LL Cool J said it best, “Don’t call it a comeback, I’ve been here for years..” You know the rest.

If you combine a love of Art, Content Creation, Fitness, and Robotic Dancing, you get Captain Planet! Wait, what? No, you get Smiz! Growing up as a single child has led the chocolate robot down his own path of creativity, and nerd culture. Being a fan of classic Anime such as Dragonball and Inuyasha, has helped boost his creativity on many occasions. Staying true to himself, and never “losing his dinosaur” has sparked a new wave of ideas for this Creator.
