Who is Green Lantern Hal Jordan
Even though there have been multiple human Green Lanterns leading the comic book series throughout the years, there isn’t a much more iconic member of the franchise than Hal Jordan. Often viewed as the main character of the franchise and the leading man among the Lanterns, Hal’s story is the story of the Green Lantern Corp and that is due to him embodying the ethos that have defined that army: force of will, determination and absolutely being fearless.
The Creation of Hal Jordan
Back in 1956, DC Comics had enjoyed a lot of success reviving and revamping the Golden Age series, the Flash, by creating a new protagonist, Barry Allen, and giving him a more science fiction angle. DC editor Julius Schwartz decided to try the same with the Golden Age series, the Green Lantern, and instead of reviving the main character, Alan Scott, he enlisted writer John Broome and artist Gil Kane in order to create a modern version of Green Lantern in 1959. This is how we got the introduction of Hal Jordan in Showcase #22 and we were presented with a much more sci-fi approach to the Green Lantern concept, which has become the accepted and most well-received version of the character’s mythos.
Hal Jordan Character Overview
OriginHal Jordan is an Air Force pilot known for his rebellious and reckless nature, but everything in his life changes when a spaceship lands on Earth, with his pilot, Green Lantern of sector 2814 (Earth’s sector), Abin Sur, dying in the process. The Green Lantern ring leaves Abin and chooses Hal to be his successor, starting his adventures as a superhero both on Earth and the entire universe as a whole.
Physical Features and Abilities
Hal Jordan is a typical human being in good physical condition and when he uses the Green Lantern ring’s powers, he wears the signature black and green uniform of the Corp. His ring gives him the ability to create any type of construct that his mind can think of and that his force of will can conjure. His ring can run out of energy, then requiring being recharged by his designated lantern.
SinestroThe main antagonist of the Green Lantern franchise, Sinestro started out as a member of the Green Lantern Corps and he was Hal’s mentor when the latter was starting out in the corp. But after Sinestro’s fascist rule of his home planet of Korugar was discovered, Hal helped to discharge him from the corps and Sinestro became the former’s mortal enemy, constantly trying to rule the universe through sheer fear. He made his debut in Green Lantern Vol. 2 issue #7 in 1961 and he had his live debut in the 2011 Green Lantern movie, played by Mark Strong.
Carol FerrisEven though Hal Jordan has been with a lot of women throughout his life, Carol Ferris is certainly the most important woman in his life. She is the vice-president of Ferris Aircraft, which was founded and developed by his father, and she had Hal working with her as one of her pilots, developing romantic interest with one another throughout the years. She was also one of Hal’s antagonists for a while when she became Star Sapphire. Much like Jordan, she was first introduced in Showcase #22 in 1959 and was played by Blake Lively in her live action debut in the 2011 Green Lantern movie
Green Arrow/Oliver QueenDespite being a superhero in his own right, Oliver Queen is also Hal Jordan’s best friend and that is due to the Hard Travellin’ Heroes storyline of the 1970s, written by Denny O’Neil and drawn by Neal Adams. They started out as political opposites when discussing social issues about the United States, but as they travelled through the country together, facing many different situations, they grew closer and their friendship has been a defining trait of both characters.
John StewartCreated in Green Lantern Vol. 2 issue #87 in 1971, John Stewart is one of the first human Lanterns to come after Hal. A former Marine and a current day architect, they initially struggled to get along due to both of them being stubborn individuals, they eventually start to like each other and develop a strong sense of camaraderie, with John always having Hal’s back and supporting through thick and thin. John’s most famous appearance was his role as a member of the Justice League in the self-titled animated series of the 2000s
First introduced in Green Lantern Corps #201 and created by writer Steve Englehart and artist Joe Staton back in 1986, Kilowog is the member of the Corps that is in charge of training the rookies and his intense training methods are known all across the universe. The sole survivor of his planet, his friendship with Hal is quite notorious and they have been friends for a long time. He was voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan in the 2011 Green Lantern movie.
Hal Jordan in Popular Culture
Perhaps the biggest mainstream exposure was the 2011 live action Green Lantern movie, starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal, but he was also part of the memorable Super Friends animated series in the many different versions of the show, voiced by Michael Rye, and he had his own animated series in the early 2010s, voiced by Josh Keaton.
He has also appeared on multiple DC animated films, with some of the most important being Justice League: War (voiced by Justin Kirk), The Death of Superman (voiced by Nathan Fillion) or Green Lantern: First Flight (voiced by Christopher Meloni), among many other film adaptions throughout the years.
